About

Walt Spence: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, builder of infrastructure that runs itself by obsession.
2011Publishing history, charted as a night's sleep · 2026

I’m Walt. I work as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist focusing on alternative therapies, with a specialty in pediatrics. I lead the hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) program at St. Mary’s Hospital and have run more than 15,000 studies over 20 years. I spend the rest of my time building infrastructure that is supposed to run without me.

That covers most of what is here. enlab is the home fleet: a few machines, a Tailscale overlay, a resolver I built instead of copying hosts files around, and a set of agents that do most of the routine work. I write Notes about what that teaches me, post shorter things to the stream, and keep every unfinished experiment on the bench because unfinished is a real state and pretending otherwise is dishonest.

Some things I believe, stated plainly so you can disagree with them:

  • What I cannot automate, I do not understand.
  • Simple code is better code. The best code is no code at all.
  • The right tool is the one that finishes the job. No team jerseys.
  • Dark themes are non-negotiable. The light mode on this site exists and was designed on purpose; it is not the default.
  • Papers and projects without code or reproduction steps are advertisements.
